Crime and other social problems stem from a variety of causes in addition to ASP, but antisocials and their actions contribute to our collective fears and preoccupations. These fears drive us to quicken our steps on a dark street, to lock our cars and houses, to suspect others’ promises. Although these instincts guard us from danger, they can become harmful if they convince us that nothing is safe, that society’s rules no longer afford any protection or assurance of order.

In a story with many twists and turns, van der Sloot was arrested as a suspect soon after Holloway’s disappearance but was released due to lack of evidence.
