The American style, on the other hand, is more open, obvious and competitive, with alliances constantly having to be reforged to fight new battles. Doubtless part of the reason is that the scale of government administration is so much larger in the United States.

The Empire was abandoned reluctantly, but with far less violence and resistance to change than was the case with other European colonial powers.
